The Canadian Cancer Society is asking people to volunteer on this year’s Relay For Life planning committee.

Middleton was the first Valley community to host the event and over the years has raised nearly $2 million for the society. In recent years, the committee has lost several longtime volunteers and is struggling to recruit new people.

“For 14 years an amazing and dedicated team of volunteers has helped the Canadian Cancer Society staff put on a fantastic Relay in Middleton,” says Sharon Bristol, manager of revenue development, Canadian Cancer Society, Nova Scotia Division. “We need the community’s involvement to help us make this event happen this year.”

The Canadian Cancer Society is a national, community-based group whose mission is to eradicate cancer and enhance the quality of life of people living with cancer. The Relay For Life is one of its key fundraisers.

The group is looking to fill a variety of key roles on the local Relay’s planning committee and is searching for a number of volunteers. Last year the Middleton Relay For Life raised over $43,000 with the support of 29 volunteers and 20 teams including 150 participants.

More than 500 communities across Canada host these fundraisers each year to raise money for the society. Bristol added that the planning committee is at the heart of each community event, working year-round to ensure its success.

“Every step taken and every dollar raised is invested in cancer research to improve the detection, diagnosis, and treatment of cancer,” says Bristol. “Together we continue to make a difference in the lives of Canadians who are faced with cancer.”

“It’s a significant commitment, we are hoping to find people who are passionate about the cause,” she said. “Perhaps people from past years may think about coming back, or maybe team captains are interested in taking on a different role.”

She added that the volunteers in each community are the magic that makes each event unique to its community. There has been such a positive, long-standing relationship with Middleton, the society would like to see the event continue.

“We know there are people out there, we just need to reach them,” she said. “We appreciate the dedication and hard work of the volunteers who have and continue to support us.”
